Detroit offers several health care providers for seniors wanting to be proactive about their health or for seniors seeking treatment for chronic conditions. The area has several hospitals, including Beaumont Hospital-Troy and University of Michigan Hospitals.
Detroit’s contributions to the automotive industry and formative music genres have staked the city’s claim to fame. The city offers a wide range of senior-friendly activities, from historic tours and museums to Vegas-style casinos. For outdoorsy seniors, Detroit’s Belle Isle Park is a must. When many people think of Detroit, they picture it as a blue-collar all-American city, and that description is not far from the truth. Once the capital of American automobile production, the city has symbolized working class gumption for much of the 20th century. However with the closing of many auto factories and shifting of production practices, the city over time had become less of the industrial icon that it once was. But in more recent years Detroit has been experiencing somewhat of a resurgence in popularity to many. As home prices across the country continue to skyrocket, Detroit remains an attractive option to younger people with its consistently low home prices and large metropolitan base. The city’s blue-collar roots are evident in its political leanings, as the region’s population often tends to favor politicians who sympathize with their working class values.

Detroit’s reputation as an automotive beacon makes it the ideal choice for the North American International Auto Show, one of the largest car shows in North America. The festival occurs annually and lasts approximately 10 days in late Spring/early Summer. Aside from displaying eye-catching luxury vehicles from around the world, the North American International Auto Show provides a stage for manufacturers to unveil new designs and give attendees a glimpse of the transportation options of tomorrow. The festival also consists of charity events and food vendors, and offers several tiers of ticket costs giving access to different portions of the show.
Being the epicenter of the American auto industry is just one of the Motor City’s claims to fame. Another? Detroit’s contributions to music, particularly soul and rock and roll. Motown Records was founded in Detroit between 1959 and 1960 and helped catapult soul music to the national and international stages. The record label continues in operation to this day, but is no longer based in Michigan. However, the sites of Motown’s early Detroit beginnings have been turned into the Motown Museum – one of the city’s most popular tourist destinations – which exhibits clothing, awards, and memorabilia of the artists who helped put both the label and the city on the pop culture map. A connected Motown studio along with founder Berry Gordy’s apartment have been decorated to appear as they did in the 60s, and visitors can admire an 1877 Steinway & Sons piano used on a number of Motown hits.
For an outdoor retreat, make sure to visit Detroit’s Belle Isle Park – a unique island park connected by a bridge to the rest of the city. The park comprises 982 acres and is even larger than New York’s Central Park. Belle Isle consists of a conservatory, featuring a greenhouse and botanical garden, as well as an aquarium, a maritime museum, a nature center, and a municipal golf course. The park also hosts frequent outdoor concerts and events throughout the year.
Transportation
Much of the city may have been designed with cars in mind, but Detroit does in fact have quite a robust and comprehensive public transportation system, consisting of over 40 bus routes, a number of which operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The public bus service is operated by the Detroit Department of Transportation, or DDOT. Reduced fares are offered to seniors 65 years of age and older following an application process.
